Budget Guidelines:
Acceptable Project Budget Items:
- Personnel
- For each doctorate listed who will receive funds from this project budget, a Curriculum Vitae and Bibliography must be provided.
- Estimate the percent effort to this project for each investigator.
- Equipment
Items of equipment costing $500 or more should be listed.
- Supplies
In general, supplies are items which are consumable, expendable, or of low unit cost, and are directly related to the functioning of the research project. The following are examples: chemicals, small pieces of equipment costing less than $500, etc.
- Animal Costs
All animal related costs, such as animal purchase and housing costs.
- Travel
Travel budget is limited to $1,000 per year for domestic travel essential to conduct of the project.
- Other Expenses
Human Subject Costs—Payment of agreement funds to human subjects and the unit cost per subject must be included.
- Indirect Costs
MTAP will allow the institution a budget item for Indirect Costs limited to 20% of the Total Direct Costs
Budget Items That Are NOT Acceptable:
- Construction, alteration, maintenance or rental of building or building space
- Office equipment and furniture
- Dues for memberships in scientific societies
- Office supplies
- Tuition
- Publication costs
- Books and journals
- Service contracts
- Waste disposal
Conformity with Budget:
Transfer of funds between an approved line item, except into the travel budget or approved salary line items, is permitted up to 20 percent of the approved line item amount. Any purchase of permanent equipment not authorized in the original budget must have prior approval.
This is not an exhaustive list of unacceptable items. MTAP reserves its right to include or exclude budget items in its reasonable discretion. MTAP reserves the right to a refund, on demand, of all funds that have been expended in unauthorized ways. The institution is responsible for any unauthorized or excessive expenditures made.
